The broadband cable industry signalled its commitment to deliver on the goals of a gigabit society.

Commenting on the adoption of the Electronic Communications Code, Cable Europe Executive Chairman Matthias Kurth said: “A central stated aim of the Code is to bring about better and faster connectivity in Europe. Powerful infrastructure with the speed and capacity to support rich, immersive experiences will be essential. The broadband cable industry is already building the fibre-powered networks for a gigabit future. The transformative changes we all want to make a reality will depend on the speed and capacity of superb infrastructure.”

The societal and economic potential of autonomous cars, local and distance virtual reality, remote working via video walls and e-learning through holographic tables are some of the experiences showcased in Cable Europe’s video short The Near Future.

The Telecoms Council also today agreed a partial general approach on a proposed EU funding programme Digital Europe. This programme will support artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, advanced digital skills and supercomputing.

“The goals of the Digital Europe programme are shared by industry, and we will play our part,” added Matthias Kurth.

“Private investment in strong, scalable, trusted and future-facing connectivity is already taking European citizens into the digitised future. We welcome the Council’s commitment to a connected Europe.”
