France’s National Commission for Computing and Freedom (CNIL) has fined the video platform Dailymotion €50,000 for failing to secure its customers’ personal data.

According to Le Monde, in December 2016 Dailymotion reported that user IDs and passwords were hacked during an attack that did not result in the loss of any other personal data.

The video platform estimated the total loss at 82.5 million email addresses and 18.3 million passwords.

Significantly, no users of Dailymotion have reported any damage as a result of the hack over one year after it took place.

Initially, the CNIL was prepared to fine Dailymotion up to €500,000, before reducing this to €100,000 following an explanation by the video platform.

It was then halved following the absence of complaints and full cooperation of Dailymotion in the investigation.
