The Ukrainian incumbent Ukrtelekom plans to invest around UAH270 million (€8.9 million) in a high speed optical network with the involvement of international partners.

In a statement it says that it has teamed up with the Slovenian telco Iskratel to launch the two-year project.

Employing GPON technology, it will involve the construction of over 3,500km of fibre-optic lines, providing broadband access to almost 300 small towns and villages.

Half of the funding for the project will be obtained in the form of an insured loan from the Slovenian Development Bank (SID), which will act as an export credit agency (ECA).
