Central and Eastern Europe is set to become an increasing focus for Netflix productions, thereby opening up opportunities for partnerships.

Speaking at PIKE 2018 in Lodz, Guy Bisson, research director, Ampere Analysis, said that the region is only just starting to be a focus for global SVOD players. In the case of Poland, the first Netflix Polish original, the crime conspiracy drama 1983, was announced in March this year.

Significantly, upcoming legislation setting a 30% European quota will in the case of the three international SVOD players Netflix, Amazon Prime and HBO Go require them to add a total of 754 titles of European origin, with the biggest being Netflix (477), to meet this target in Poland.

As of August this year, the proportion of Netflix’s Polish catalogue that was of European origin stood at 16%, while the totals for Amazon Prime and HBO Go were 15% and 20% respectively.

Looking more generally at Netflix, 52% of its upcoming productions will be made outside the US. Furthermore, 29% of all its localised originals are co-productions and 56% of these co-productions originate in European countries.
