Shake-up in Spanish DTT market

Spain’s National Commission of Competition Markets has launched a public consultation on the future of the country’s DTT transmission service.

Currently, Cellnex Telecom has a complete hold on the market, a position it inherited from the infrastructure company Albertis, now the CNMC wants to open the market up to other players.

Cellnex currently charges between five and seven million Euros per year for a place in one of the Spanish multiplexes, depending on whether the broadcaster needs a standard or high definition signal.

While wanting to see an end the Cellnex monopoly originally established in 2005, CNMC is prepared to ease the restrictions on pricing to what it is describing as “reasonable price obligation”

Possible new entrants to the market include the telco Telefonica and satellite operator Astra.
