German cable operator Unitymedia has increased its turnover in Q2 2018 by 5% year-on-year to €611 million; revenues from business customers doubled.

The Liberty Global subsidiary gained 61,000 new internet, telephony and TV subscriptions in Q2 2018, including 38,000 for internet and 37,000 for telephony. The growth was higher than in Q2 2017 when 54,000 new contracts were signed.

As part of its New Wave programme, Unitymedia is accelerating the internet speeds of more than half a million existing customers to a basic download speed of up to 30Mbps at no additional cost. The gradual introduction of the basic internet speed is scheduled to be completed by the end of November 2018.

Unitymedia customers with a basic internet subscription will then surf the net at 30Mbps, almost twice as fast as the average German internet user, according to the company.

More than 80% of new Unitymedia customers booked data rates of 150Mbps and more in Q2 2018.

After its introduction in Bochum, the cable operator plans to roll out its 1Gbps high-speed internet access in Frankfurt, Cologne and Düsseldorf this year.
