VodafoneZiggo tests Docsis 3.1

VodafoneZiggo has started Docsis 3.1 tests in the city of Utrecht with 20 households and companies.

Thd cablers has the ambition to roll out a ‘network off the future’ with Gigabit speeds of more than 1,000 Mbit/s from 2020.

This investment in its mobile, fibre-optic and coax networks will enable VodafoneZiggo to more than offset the explosive growth in bandwidth and speed in the coming years.

“We are already building the network of the future today,” says Eben Albertyn, Technical Director of VodafoneZiggo.

“Because technological developments are rapid and offer countless new, clever possibilities that enrich our lives. This demands a lot from our networks in terms of capacity, speed and reliability. And that is exactly what we are showing in this pilot in Utrecht where we are increasing the speed to as much as 1 Gbit/s.

The pilot with the new cable network is based on Docsis 3.1, a technology that runs via the existing coax cable and can offer far more network capacity than the current standard. Eventually, the Internet speeds can reach up to 5 Gigabit per second for downloading and 1 Gbit/s for uploading. The connection is also even more stable, secure and the latency (the time required for the network to react when data is requested) shorter.

VodafoneZiggo wants to bring its mobile and fixed connections closer together. Customers will hardly notice anymore that their devices switch between landline, Wi-Fi or mobile internet. This requires a stable, smart and high-quality network with far more network capacity and faster internet connections. For this network of the future, the company is developing various pilot projects and partnerships on its fixed and mobile networks.
