German technology company WISI will unveil an enhanced version of its smart broadcast platform Firefly at IBC 2018 in Amsterdam.

The end-to-end solution from playout to head-end uses HLS, the http-based streaming protocol, and provides a cost-effective alternative to video delivery via satellite, antenna or dedicated lines, according to WISI. Linear TV channels and video content is delivered to head-ends as HLS streams over the open internet.

The target group of the solution first presented at ANGA COM 2017 are broadcasters and TV and video service providers aiming to significantly reduce distribution costs. Firefly also offers new options for cable operators and enables the hospitality industry to upgrade existing offers with additional content and video services.

The heart of the system is the Firefly HLS IRD receiver. The new device developed by WISI receives the HLS streams in the head-end and converts them into QAM, DVB-T, ASI and/or ISDB-T signals. With a single chassis, operators can receive up to six HD or SD TV channels streamed via the internet, then decrypt and process them for the video network.

To secure the stream delivery, operators can encrypt streams at the source and decrypt them at the receiving head-end. WISI will show the Firefly broadcast platform at its IBC stand B50 in hall 5.
